Installare Knoppix via Ethernet

Postdi Uncle Dan » 12/05/04 17:38

Grazie a chi saprà darmi qualche dritta.

I am working on this as well. It seems relatively easy if you have PXE support in the NICs on the PCs, and much harder without. If you have PXE, the machines are set up to do network boots. If not, then you are into a black magic realm of "etherboot roms" and "boot floppies".

It is supposed to be straight forward if you use a knoppix machine asI
the server, and do not already have a dhcp/netboot server on your network.
If so, you setup the server by going to knoppix->network services->terminal server, and run through a confiration to tell it what ip addrs to use for terminals, and what network cards you think they will need.

If you already have a dhcp server (like a NAT router), it might be more complicated. My life is harder because I already have a netboot server in my LAN, and I need to move a presumed working configuration from the knoppix server to the other machine. I haven't made that work yet.

hope this helps,
-dB

Proprio nessuna idea?

No, mi rimangio (spero solo in parte) quello che ho detto:

We have several computers that are configured identically for the product that we sell. So I start one "set" up. One acts as the knoppix boot server and the others net boot off of it. Then I connect a long ethernet cable to a "fresh" set that has not had the OS or our special software loaded yet and net boot them off of the knoppix server.

anche perché poi dice:

Since Knoppix auto configures the hardware, I don't have to mess with making boot floppies or keeping track of them.

Uncle Dan:

If you can find a way to put the CD image on the HD then you're OK.

"knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda1 Boot from previously copied CD-Image"

This is one of the boot options in the latest 3.3 update.

There are several ways of getting the CD copied, an external CD, via a network or put the HD in an other computer just for the copying.

Grazie Dylan ;)
